In her short life, Emeline💃💋 has been through one traumatic event after another. Her first husband, Peter was murdered. Her second husband, Nicholas🐺🍆🌋🔪, is the brother of her first husband. Nicholas🐺🍆🌋🔪 was badly burned in the arson fire🔥 which almost destroyed their castle🏰 on their wedding night Then he comes down with the pestilence and nearly dies.
Meanwhile, he sends Emeline👰💋 off to stay with relatives after the fire🔥, since the castle🏰 needs to be rebuilt.
Much of the book📑 has the two of them split apart, as Nicholas🐺🍆🌋🔪 chases down the people who started the fire🔥 and killed his brother.

This is a wonderfully written book📑! It's an historical romance, as well as an arson and murder mystery. It's a testimony to the fragility of life in the dark ages. Now, if I Just had the recipe for Apple codlings that Emeline👰💋 loves, I'd be all set!
Highly recommend. This book has an extensive story line which riveted me to its pages, all the way through!
The Flame Eater is the first I've read by this author but I was intrigued from the beginning. Emeline (Emma) is facing marriage to man who she has never met - the brother of her former fiance, the fiance who was murdered. She has heard many negative things about Nicholas from Peter, but is having to marry Nicholas, regardless of her feelings. Nicholas is about as excited about having to marry Emeline as she is, having heard disparaging things about her from Peter. There are so many twists and turns to this story that just keep pulling me along. There are plenty of family dynamics at play in this story, and always the mystery surrounding who murdered Peter and Emeline's father (and it turns out those were not the only two to fall victim to murder followed by flames. I had my suspicions who was committing the murders but had not guessed who the actual culprit was. While this book is very long it moved along at a good pace as Nicholas and Emeline get to know each other better and better. She becomes a much stronger character over the course of the story, and Nicholas becomes more open and letting others see the real him - not the man he had been accused of being. Would be interesting to see what becomes of some of the other characters in this story, such as Avice (Emeline's sister) or Sissy (Nicholas' cousin).
Do you enjoy a good read that will keep you on the edge of your seat trying to guess the sub plots? Well this is one of those great reads. Each time I thought I knew who was the 'bad egg' in the 'dysfunctional family basket' the author would throw in more red herrings and suspicions to have me totally re- guessing. Set in 15th century England amid political unrest, family jealousy and tragedy the cast is varied and all have secrets and deep personal mistrusts, hatred and opinions. Some are also very nievè, innocent and sheltered from the real world while others are the ones that most families have somewhere and spend so much time trying to avoid!! Marriages are negotiated for status, material gains but not for love.
Young Emeline ( Emma) is told she will be marrying Nicholas, second son of a drunken Earl who is still mourning the loss of his eldest son. Watching the relationship between Emma and Nicholas tentatively unfold and then as tragedy and circumstances forces the need to develop trust is beautifully written and captured by the author. Rich in history and everyday life in medieval England gives an added layer and emotional attachment with this story. The thought that repeatedly came to mind for me was how lucky we are to have the freedom to just throw on a t- shirt and shorts ...certainly saves time for other things although great here in tropical Australia but probably not for an English winter or rainy day.
This was a stand-alone book with a HEA and an ending that revealed the secrets of 'who done it'...well done to the author although when revealed it did make sense. I voluntarily received and read an ARC of this book via Hidden Gems and it really kept my interest until the very last page. An author I will certainly read more of.
